Gaining Independence - Day 27

Well, no.  He's definitely not independent by any means.  Phoenix still needs help going to the bathroom, eating, and cleaning himself.  But we are getting more comfortable with him and giving him a bit more freedom.

Gaining Independence

Last night was the first night we let Phoenix sleep in a different room as us.  The motivating factor being his litterbox.  To encourage him to start using his litterbox, I need to make sure he has access to it.  Our bedroom setup didn't allow for that.  Instead, we've moved him into the corner of my office where we can leave his pen open and walk out to the litterbox.  Not that he's doing that quite yet... but he's going to have to start sometime.

Though I was impressed by him today!  After I got him started, he was able to finish pooping on his own in the litterbox.  While I still haven't had him pee on his own yet, these are hopefully good signs that Phoenix is on his way to being a pro-litterboxer.  It couldn't come soon enough; I've started rationing out my remaining cotton balls.  Yes, I'm almost completely out of cotton balls after starting with 600.

Seriously though - I've decided to purchase some baby wipes instead.  Even though Phoenix doesn't use the litterbox, we make him pee and poop in it.  This means I don't need the super fluffy cotton balls to help with bathroom breaks.  The baby wipes will hopefully help with some of the smaller messes.  Now that the diarrhea is much more under control, we don't need to bathe as often; the baby wipes should help with the general cleanup we would need to do.  Also, the fact that there was a cow on the package had nothing to do with my reasons for purchasing this particular brand of baby wipe.  Though it is the reason I chose to take a picture of this particular package.

His growth has also prompted some new purchases.  On route to our home to support a growing kitten are the following:
  1. A larger pen
  2. Some litterboxes
  3. Wet food
The wet food in particular is exciting.  We'll likely start feeding him the wet food in about 1-1.5 weeks.  We'll be on the look out for premolars, which will give us the signal that we should make the switch.  Guess we'll see how it goes!

Photos and Videos

I feel like this is appropriate given it's October.  For some reason it reminds me of Jack from The Nightmare Before Christmas.  It's probably just the fact that his eyes look like black holes.

We've been playing a bit more.  Here we were playing with a little mouse!

Video of play time with the mouse!  I am worrying that he might be over focused on the phone.  Has it become an integral part of his life since it's been in his face for a while?  Just look at how he was staring at it!

Crinkle ball play time?  I don't know if you would call this playing.  More like patting the crinkle ball on its non-existent back.

Too cute!  Sorry, the commentary just comes out.  I spend a lot of time chatting with the little guy!

Working on my biting response.  Gave him a toy instead right after this to chomp on instead.

Growing Up - Day 17

17 days, 7.65oz, 6 feedings, 2 butt baths, 1 dose Ponazuril, 0 vet visits.  A nice count down to summarize my day.  Phoenix has been doing well.  He continues to have blood come out after going to the bathroom, poor guy.  You can tell he's in pain when it's happening.  Let's hope that some more time with the medication will help improve this.  His poop today already seemed better than before (less accidents), so that's hopefully a good sign. Approaching a Milestone I'm always excited when Phoenix hits some kind of milestone.  It's a way to make me feel more comfortable about his state.  I always worry that maybe something is wrong (especially internally), so seeing this normal progress really helps. I've referenced the kitten lady before - here's a nice page from her site about determining age (but also kind of demonstrates some milestones).  Check it out; http://www.kittenlady.org/age, but I've also included a picture from her site belo...

Upgrades - Day 20

Day 20 and Phoenix is still going strong.  He's been gaining weight like a monster (hit 250g today), and I think the poop storm is starting to slow down.  Eyes are wide open, energy levels are high, and fluffy factor is continually increasing. Upgrades Phoenix got a home upgrade today.  I had purchased a collapsible pen that arrived a few days ago.  This morning, the little guy was complaining even after eating a bunch of food.  So I decided to go ahead and upgrade from a container to this new pen. I regret not getting one size bigger.  I'll need to think about a litter box soon, and it would have fit a lot bigger if I upped the size.  We'll see what happens.  I also haven't figured out what I'll do at night.  He usually sleeps next to me, but maybe it's time to leave him in one spot and keep him out of the bedroom?  I just worry I won't be able to hear him crying if something goes wrong. All in all, I'm generally happy with this new pen...

Kitten Concerns - Days 45 and 46

Phoenix is as energetic as ever.  He runs and jumps and falls.  He eventually sleeps.  Then wakes up to go through it all again.  Overall he's doing alright, but our poop problems have returned. Kitten Concerns Phoenix has been able to poop on his own for a while now.  The poops have largely been formed, so things have been on the upside.  Unfortunately yesterday afternoon, he had a pretty loose stool.  And then shortly after, it was pretty much only liquid coming out for the poor guy. I gave him his dewormer yesterday.  There was a lot more to feed him, but I got most of it in him.  I got some of it on my pants... but the majority of it successfully went into his mouth.  He did fight it for the most part, but we got it down!  It was the next poop after that that came out as liquid. We've also recently introduced some moistened dry food for him.  So this new food could explain the change in his poop.  I'll continue to moni...
