Escape Artist - Days 38 and 39

Phoenix has transitioned into being an escape artist.  He's gotten incredibly mobile and incredibly playful.  He still has a great set of lungs on him, and he is not afraid to use it.  In the all too familiar words of Phoenix: meow, meow, meow.  Meow.  Meow.  Meow! MEOW!

Escape Artist

Unfortunately, yesterday, Phoenix discovered his ability to escape from his enclosure.  I was in a meeting when I heard him climbing.  I looked over just in time to see his paw touch the top of his play area before falling back inside.  So I knew he was going to be able to get out soon.  I just didn't realize soon was in the next 30 minutes.

So, it was decided that I would zip up the top of his enclosure.  While I knew he could get out from the outside, I was hoping it would take him some time to realize.  And it did.  But not for very long.

So I knew I had to go ahead and close off the other side of the pen with the remaining pieces for the enclosure.  But I didn't have time at that moment.  Nguyen and I are in a training on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-9pm, and I still had an assignment to finish before then.  So I decided I'd let him run around the room while I tried to finish the work before the class started.

The problem is, the room I'm in gets insanely hot.  And with the excessive heat going through, I needed the door open so I wouldn't melt.  So we needed to block the door way... which should have been straightforward but...

Hah, poor little guy.  Don't worry, shortly after he tried again 😑.  Since clearly that barrier wasn't working, I went for another alternative.

While I don't have a video of this one, he also got out of here.  The little monster is crafty.  I mean look at this guy.  Clearly a monster.

No really.  Just look at this face.

Clearly the face of a monster.

Growing

Outside of his escapery, Phoenix has been continuing to grow and he enjoys playing.  He's moved on to just eating his wet food without any water or milk in it.  I have started adding a tiny bit of pumpkin back to his diet here and there, but overall he's doing very well.  We're still supplementing a bit with formula, but it's clear that he has a tendency to over eat.  So we've been slowly cutting back.  We don't give formula with every meal, but more like every other.  And we've reduced feedings to only 4-5 times a day.  And remember how I said he's vocal.  As he meows away, he'll stick his face in his food.  And continue to meow, until he fully engages in eating.  I didn't catch the first 2-4 meows in this video, but hopefully you get the idea.

I still have not been able to get Phoenix to successfully take in any water.  So I may add a bit of water to his wet food just to make sure he stays hydrated if we continue to reduce the formula.  He's had a water bowl out for a few days... but the closest he gets is dipping his face in it, and then trying to sneeze the water off his nose.  Baby steps.  No really.  He's stepped in it a few times as well.

I also called the vet to follow up on getting Phoenix vaccinated.  I have an appointment on the calendar for November 2nd (8 weeks) to get him his first set of vaccines.  Additional follow ups will happen at 12 and 16 weeks.  Exciting!  Well for me.  I'm sure Phoenix likely wouldn't be excited about getting stabbed.  But I'm excited to get another milestone out of the way.

Adventuring

Tonight, we've let Phoenix run around the house pretty freely.  We have the bathroom doors closed and the door to Asher's litterbox closed.  In particular, we don't want him around Asher's litter as it is a clumping litter and we don't want him to ingest it by accident.  We let him explore around, though he generally tends to like to be somewhere near us.

I brought a bed out into the living room area, and he ended up sleeping there for a bit as well.  Here's a couple of different blurry photos and videos (I didn't want to get up from the couch because he would have woken up if I got close).

Sleepy

Waking up

He woke up 15-30 minutes later and went exploring again.  He walked around a lot, and he seemingly wanted to get my attention at some point.  He sat nearby and was staring at me.  I think he was plotting how he would eventually get onto the couch.  But seems like this is one thing he's still not quite able to do.  But I don't think it'll take very long.

He also played with Nguyen for a bit.  Or played on Nguyen.  Not sure if Phoenix knows there's a difference.

And he eventually decided to sleep next to Nguyen, where he stayed another 30-45 minutes.

He' up again now and playing around.  He received some toys from his aunties and cousins, and he's been making good use of them!  I shared a video last time of a long fuzzy toy that came from auntie and cousins from the north!  Today I'm sharing a video of a new cactus for both Asher and Phoenix from the auntie in the south!  In this video, he was using the cactus has a hiding spot.  Nguyen was breaking down boxes, and Phoenix seemed generally intrigued by the noise.

For now, it's time for bed.  I'll also be posting two days in a row sometime soon.  I'll generally never post on a Tuesday or Thursday while I'm in this training course.  So seems like I'll stick to a MWF schedule and then decide on either Sat or Sun depending on my mood.  I lean towards Sunday - will make Monday lighter with only 1 day to cover.  In theory, anyway.

Growing Up - Day 17

17 days, 7.65oz, 6 feedings, 2 butt baths, 1 dose Ponazuril, 0 vet visits.  A nice count down to summarize my day.  Phoenix has been doing well.  He continues to have blood come out after going to the bathroom, poor guy.  You can tell he's in pain when it's happening.  Let's hope that some more time with the medication will help improve this.  His poop today already seemed better than before (less accidents), so that's hopefully a good sign. Approaching a Milestone I'm always excited when Phoenix hits some kind of milestone.  It's a way to make me feel more comfortable about his state.  I always worry that maybe something is wrong (especially internally), so seeing this normal progress really helps. I've referenced the kitten lady before - here's a nice page from her site about determining age (but also kind of demonstrates some milestones).  Check it out; http://www.kittenlady.org/age, but I've also included a picture from her site belo...

Upgrades - Day 20

Day 20 and Phoenix is still going strong.  He's been gaining weight like a monster (hit 250g today), and I think the poop storm is starting to slow down.  Eyes are wide open, energy levels are high, and fluffy factor is continually increasing. Upgrades Phoenix got a home upgrade today.  I had purchased a collapsible pen that arrived a few days ago.  This morning, the little guy was complaining even after eating a bunch of food.  So I decided to go ahead and upgrade from a container to this new pen. I regret not getting one size bigger.  I'll need to think about a litter box soon, and it would have fit a lot bigger if I upped the size.  We'll see what happens.  I also haven't figured out what I'll do at night.  He usually sleeps next to me, but maybe it's time to leave him in one spot and keep him out of the bedroom?  I just worry I won't be able to hear him crying if something goes wrong. All in all, I'm generally happy with this new pen...

Kitten Concerns - Days 45 and 46

Phoenix is as energetic as ever.  He runs and jumps and falls.  He eventually sleeps.  Then wakes up to go through it all again.  Overall he's doing alright, but our poop problems have returned. Kitten Concerns Phoenix has been able to poop on his own for a while now.  The poops have largely been formed, so things have been on the upside.  Unfortunately yesterday afternoon, he had a pretty loose stool.  And then shortly after, it was pretty much only liquid coming out for the poor guy. I gave him his dewormer yesterday.  There was a lot more to feed him, but I got most of it in him.  I got some of it on my pants... but the majority of it successfully went into his mouth.  He did fight it for the most part, but we got it down!  It was the next poop after that that came out as liquid. We've also recently introduced some moistened dry food for him.  So this new food could explain the change in his poop.  I'll continue to moni...
